Burberry Weather the Storm

The rumour mill was a-buzzing as always before the Burberry show. And because it’s Burberry, they all turned out to be true. Kate Bosworth and Rachel Bilson were flown in for the occasion, Mario Testino, snow on tap - but let’s not get ahead of ourselves...

If this season was all about leather, next season is all about fur. We’ve had one too many winter’s struggling with Baltic temperatures to know that a cotton trench is not going to weather the snow storm. So wily as ever, Burberry are adding some padding to the house’s trademark for autumn winter 2011. Fur replaces the studs of spring summer and wraps around arms and aprons, leather is only to be found on the piping of cream padded macs and in skinny bow belts – a huge about turn for the label defined by the biker jacket for two seasons. Further warmth was to be found in coats made of cable knit and cosy cross-check swing jackets. As well as the coats there were silk round-neck and long-sleeved shift dresses that ballooned in stiff shapes at the skirt.

Mirroring the rain that fell at the end of the menswear show in January, the heavens opened and down fell acres of snow on to the catwalk. But the girls were prepared, reappearing in identical Perspex capes over their already weather-friendly looks. Bravo.
