We tend to presume that designers are itching to wear what they create. Not the men obviously - we doubt (although we could be wrong) that Alber Elbaz dons the Lanvin dresses. But Stella McCartney is regularly spotted in her own creations and we bet that Phoebe Philo's wardrobe is filled with Celine. Surely this is one of the perks of the job?
Not necessarily. In an interview with Opening Ceremony's blog one half of the Rodarte design duo, Laura Mulleavy, was asked whether she wears the label's pieces. Her reply? 'No. Not once. I think that would be very weird. I probably wouldn't wear any of the stuff I make.'
Frankly we think she's missing a trick but as she doesn't wear her pieces, it comes as no surprise that she doesn't design with herself in mind. In fact, there is no Rodarte muse. Laura says, 'I feel like if you don't have people in mind when you design, it's a lot more freeing and you don't really have to worry. People just want to look good and have fun. I think that's the way I think about it.'More
