In the trio of designers who showed yesterday only one had hit the catwalk before. Heikki Salonen is in his third Fashion East season, and this time around he looked to American Indians - and skateboarders. The combination may seem unusual but it worked. The colours were sun bleached and well-worn, all biscuits, greys and white, and the pieces had the appearance of much-loved favourites. And the pieces were all teamed with holey, crocheted socks and Birkenstocks.
Heikkis style always leans towards the boyish and this was no exception, from the hooded shirts and drape fronted jackets to the frayed shorts and slouchy printed T-shirts. But there was a full, printed skirt and a grey shirt with a ruffled chiffon hem that ticked the feminine boxes beautifully.
Former textile designer Felicity Brown offered up a truly stunning collection. She created simple, short dress shapes out of hand-dyed silks and adorned them with layer upon layer of exaggerated ruffles. In contrasting shades of blues, purples, yellows and pinks, they looked like flower petals, and of all the dresses that weve seen this week - and there have been many - these were some of our favourites.
She alternated the more dramatic creations with perfectly simple tunic tops and pencil skirts that had layers of contrasting colours showing at the hem - they may have been less show-stopping
