As we reached the top of the seemingly endless ramp at Topshops show space for Meadham Kirchhoff we could hear the sound of Tchaikovskys Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy. And as we got closer to the catwalk we could see that it had been filled with shrubbery and what looked like giant lollipops all spray painted purple. So far so sweet - but as the pieces hit the runway and the music changed to something straight out of a horror film, it was clear that we were in for something much more twisted.
It seems that the design duo had taken note of the pretty, feminine aesthetic that has inspired so many designers this season and decided to give it a punk makeover - their girls were Miss Congeniality's who had taken a turn towards the dark side. There were frilly pink dresses with ribbons and lace, but they were layered with oversized painted and printed T-shirts, khaki cotton overalls, grungy oversize cardigans and leather bombers scrawled with graffiti. The models sported thick slouchy knee socks and glittery platforms, velvet ribbon chokers and kitsch tiaras. And their hair was was rainbow striped and grungy - perhaps not a style that well all be copying but brilliant none the less.
After the ultra feminine shows that weve seen over the last few days it was a welcome antidote - we loved it.
