Paul Smith gave his girls 1950s quiffs and rocker attitudes for his spring 2011 show. The look was decidedly mannish - cropped or rolled tailored trousers in everything from light suiting to silk that moved from green to purple. Oversized slouchy shirts were paired with polka dot cravats and waistcoats. And he lengthened masculine jackets and shirts and turned them into playsuits.
There were nods to feminine style; sheer chiffon polka dot blouses that will be right on trend come next spring judging by the other shows weve seen this week, and printed kitten heels made from perspex.
But the highlight of the show wasnt actually the clothes - it was Smith proving that hes a consummate gentleman, pausing halfway through his walk down the runway to kiss Joan Burnstein on both cheeks as she sat on the front row.
