After two seasons showing on the Fashion East line-up, yesterday saw Michael van der Ham make his first solo outing. He may have felt the pressure but boy did he rise to the challenge.
His signature is already secured - patchwork dresses made from found vintage fabrics - and this was his most sophisticated take on the theme yet. Gone were the cotton florals and in their place were luxe, rich fabrics, silks, brocade, sequins and, for the first time, fabrics of his own creation - tactile devore velvets.
He offered up fitted dresses with knee length skirts, there were gently gathered sleeves, subtle tucks and sash-like drapes where the pieces of his jigsaw fitted together and for those on the hunt for something a touch more understated, there were beautifully cut tailored trousers and blouses with just a hint of contrast. And the colours - purples, yellows, blues and pinks - were ladylike and elegant without verging on saccharine.
