The Mulberry girl grows up

Held around the rooftop pool of New York's Soho House, Mulberry brought an alternative dose of English eccentricity to the Meatpacking district.

With Brit poster girls Alexa Chung and Florence Welch in attendance, we saw a more grown-up Mulberry girl for Spring/Summer 2011.

Previously known for being the English ditz that throws a mis-matched outfit together (successfully of course), here we saw a more business-like aesthetic with matching jacket and skirts and luxe blouses tucked in to louche, high-waisted trousers.

'The collection is getting bigger', said Creative Director Emma Hill post show. 'We have posher fabrics and we wanted to grow older. We've brought in the ¾ length and it looks richer.'

Inspired by the film Grey Gardens and the children's novel The Secret Garden, ('It always starts with a film', said Hill), the focus was on tailored, vintage-like pieces that are easy to wear. Mulberry's love of playing with proportions was highlighted in giant bow dresses and skirts.

The models wore a uniform wig of red, fringed hair but not in homage to attendee Florence. 'No, we saw a wonderful model called Julia Johansen and that was it, the casting was inspired.'

And it wouldn't be a Mulberry show without talking about the bags. Along with variations on the Alexa, the trompe l'oeil effect Tillie and chain handled Cory family is introduced.
