First was the global fashion empire, with the Marc Jacobs stamp on everything from red carpet gowns to collectible lipstick cases and wellington boots. Next, the series of best-selling fragrances, accompanied by a self-starring glossy campaign- so far, so almost the traditional fashion designer trajectory. But last week, Jacobs surprised everyone by opening Bookmarc, his first book shop, complete with a suite of branded stationary and a selection of coffee table tomes.
Now, Jacobs has released images from his first book, "The Men + Women of Marc Jacobs"; a photographic essay on over 150 of his staff, to be published on Monday, and described in the forward as the "family album of what may be what probably is simply the coolest and the hottest rainbow family on the planet.
With the striking portraits taken by Brian Bowen Smith, the photographer behind some of Jacobs' distinctive advertising campaigns, the designer's own features naturally loom large, in an image taken from a 2006 charity campaign. The next step in the Marc Jacobs business plan rumoured to be the opening of a café in Uptown New York... and our fingers are crossed to see some MJ crockery and glassware on the tables.
