Could ethical fashion get cheaper?

There's no denying that most discerning fashion fans would happily buy into the world of ethical fashion in theory. However, the higher prices that you have pay to for environmentally friendly production puts some of us off. Especially when, in the world of fast fashion, we're used to popping into Zara or Topshop and loading up on all the latest trends without breaking the bank.

Harold Tillman, head of the British Fashion Council, has cottoned on to this fact and is starting a campaign that might help. He wants brands that champion a more thoughtful attitude to fashion to be given tax breaks by the government. He hopes that by making life easier for ethical businesses to survive it may not only help to bring their prices down but also encourage other, less environmentally concerned labels to change their ways.

Tillman says, 'If UK citizens can get tax breaks on more energy efficient cars and other sustainable products, why can’t they wear their values with pride and get tax breaks on ethical fashion?' And he's gathered support from other big names within the industry - Vivienne Westwood, Monsoon and the London College of Fashion's Centre for Sustainable Fashion are all signing up.
