Prabal Gurung, the much in demand American fashion designer who has dressed everybody from Michelle Obama to Demi Moore, was the star guest at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York this week. He was there to talk to students about his career, and while he was being interviewed he let slip a few things that caught our attention.
Gurung was born and grew up in Nepal, and it seems that Western popular culture was a bit thin on the ground. But apparently we can thank his discovery of Oprah Winfrey when he was a teenager for his decision to move Stateside and conquer the fashion world. The first show that he watched was about following your dreams, and it spurred him to apply to Parsons in New York. According to WWD, the first time that Oprah sported one of his dresses was 'my defining, full-circle moment.'
But what really has us talking this morning was his response when asked about his future plans. 'Theres always that dream, to go to a big fashion house,' he said, which of course has got us thinking about which label he could potentially head up. In the past he has worked for Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass, but his polished and sophisticated signature style could easily land him a job at any of the classic labels. Watch this space...More
