Givenchy whispers rather than shouts and its stripped-down blazers, ankle-length cigarette pants and sheer neoprene roll-necks lends a 1990s air. Fine cream lace tops had red lace elbow patches and black lace bibs. True red long-line blazers were strong and sexy against slimmed, cropped trousers.

For evening, Tisci showed black crepe dresses with concertina ruffles on the chest, simple velvet shifts with a silk turned down corner and striking red lining. Black cape and lace-up boots lent an equestrian air.

A vivid picture emerged of just how the modern woman needs to dress for Autumn Winter 2010. Minimal, sexy and somehow managing to make those brilliant velvet chokers-come-hair ties work.
