The British fashion designer was just 40 years old. A statement just released on behalf of his family says 'On behalf of Lee McQueens family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lees family.'
McQueen was known as the bad boy of the British fashion industry due to his headline grabbing pieces - from bumster trousers to his 'Highland Rape' collection and models painted to resemble blow-up dolls. His shows in Paris were always the hot tickets of fashion week, with the fashion press queuing up to see what his incredible imagination would come up with for the next spectacular finale. Over the course of his career he spray painted models, created a hologram of Kate Moss, made a human chess game and filmed Raquel Zimmerman morphing into a lizard.
He was named British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2003 and was awarded a CBE for services to fashion.
ELLE's editor, Lorraine Candy paid tribute to the designer saying, 'We are all incredibly saddened by the news of his death and our thoughts are with his family. Lee was the face of British fashion and his genius will be sorely missed by those who knew him and those of us who admired his unique and magical work.'More
