Pierre Cardin's big year

Cardin is responsible for some of the most iconic outfits of the 1960s, not to mention providing inspiration for countless designers over the past three decades. He began his career working for Christian Dior before setting up his own fashion house in 1950, producing much-coveted couture collections before turning his hand to ready-to-wear. All the space-age, geometric designs that you associate with the Swinging Sixties? All his. And he was the creator of the bubble dress. He was also one of the first designers to take advantage of foreign markets - he was blazing a trail in China back in the 1970's - and set the standard when it came to including everything from alarm clocks to car interiors in his brand.

So it's about time that the fashion industry honoured him, and at the annual Night of Stars gala in New York this October Cardin will be presented with the Superstar award. Judging by past events a whole host of famous faces will be on hand to help him celebrate - previously Valentino was presented his award by Meryl Streep.

And the fashion crowd will be able to meet the man himself in person at Paris Fashion Week. According to WWD he will be launching a monograph of his career at his restaurant, Maxims.
