ELLE hosts exclusive V.I.P preview of Sophie Calle: Talking to Strangers

It was one of Frieze week’s (art's answer to fashion week) hottest tickets and designers and celebrities flooded to see the acclaimed French artist’s first UK retrospective.

Calle (pictured), famous for her documentary-style use of photography, film and text had the VIP crowd mesmerised by the emotive body of work and installations that is taking over two floors of the gallery until January.

Candy set the style agenda in a silk, Giles print dress, while model Ben Grimes and her design partner Lily Parker showcased their own LPBG collection. Guests, including designer Richard Nicoll and musician Jarvis Cocker got to take home their very own piece of Calle artwork. The artist has created a special collector’s cover of ELLE’s November issue which was given away last night.

The most epic piece in the show, Take Care of Yourself, was first shown in 2007 at the French pavilion of the Venice Biennale. Translated into English especially for this show, it is poetic revenge on a grand scale, the result of Sophie sending a rejection letter from a former boyfriend to 107 women from different professions and asking them to interpret it.

The gallery was buzzing as Sophie took to the floor to answer questions from Iwona on the astonishing piece, and her career. While outside a huge queue of fans waited for their own chance to view the exhibition.
