For autumn 09 Pilati took the classics: the white shirt; the charcoal pinstripe pencil skirt; the trench coat; and the waistcoat, and somehow made them sexy and new. It was all down to the smallest things done with unrivalled execution: the shape of a shoulder here and a curved seam there. These were utterly covetable clothes to wear season after season.
A fierce black leather, knee length jumpsuit opened the show - it was strong, simple and sexy. A loosely cut black leather biker jacket with a tough studded collar followed worn with a chic pencil skirt. Black high waisted tapered leather trousers looked sublime with white shirts and classic charcoal grey pinstripe tailoring was perfectly restrained and chic.
There was a feeling of control that comes with experience - not just in the pared back designs - but the woman wearing them too. Zip details, red shoes, leather gloves (with the bangles cleverly built into the cuffs) trench coats with little else, it sounds clichéd, but in Pilatis hands it was both sexy and sophisticated and the epitome of Parisian chic that deserved its standing ovation.
