The hotly anticipated on-schedule show for Fashion East turned out to be a surprising highlight of the day. Held at Terence Conrans Quaglinos restaurant, the three designer show was hosted by the hilarious and irreverent drag artist Johnny Woo.
Resplendent in a zebra print kaftan, Woo announced that he was not wearing the roomy garment due to too much lunch at Quaglinos but simply because it looks fabulous. And fabulous he was, keeping the fashion pack smiling despite end-of-week fatigue.
Fashion East is a show for those in the know and guests yesterday included Roisin Murphy, US ELLEs Style Director Kate Lanphear and super-scribe Suzy Menkes. The all female designer line up hand picked by founder and top talent spotter Lulu Kennedy did not disappoint. First up was Natascha Stolle, who showed last season alongside David David and Louise Gray. For autumn 09 she showed a coherent and playful collection- this was all in the detail, from the knotted grey jersey dresses to the oversized stockings and negligees sewn on to the front of T-shirts.
Second to show was Maria Francesca Pepe who has recently won the attention of celebrity fans Alice Dellal and Roisin Murphy and looks set to achieve big things for 2009. Already well known for her punkish jewellery her current collection was led by accessories. Fierce eighties leather trousers and sharp tailored jackets in a predominantly black palette were offset with large pieces such as a mammoth copper amulets and headpieces with the feeling of armour.
Finally came Holly Fulton, who after graduating from an MA at The Royal College of Art in 2007 worked at Lanvin under fashion great Alber Elbaz. Elbazs influence could be seen in this divine collection that sparkled with future prom
