Now the collection is to be sold and is expected to raise up to £240,000,000, some of which will go to charity.
Along with his partner, Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent bought over 700 pieces, ranging from paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Goya, antique furniture, sculpture, silver and Art Deco objects. He was very particular about the pieces that he selected, choosing only the highest quality and most beautiful things. He said, 'Art has held an important place in my life and work...I have always believed that art is not just a part of culture, but of life itself.'
Pierre Berge is now sending both his own and Saint Laurent's collection to auction with Christies, in what is one of the biggest sales of private art ever seen. The money raised will be used to set up a new foundation devoted to scientific research and the fight against AIDS. The auction is due to take place on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of February next year at the Grand Palais in Paris.
