This iconic vision set the tone for much of the show - a masterclass in Chanel suiting from Karl Largerfeld, who seemed to be inspired by everything from the sea (think scalloped hem skirts and star-fish buttons) to nature, cue feather edges on sheer sleeved evening dresses, to Victoriana - in the shape of high necked, ruffle-edged blouses with bow ties.
He also displayed a collection of elegant cocktail dresses with short, short hems, embellished with giant pearl brooch like buttons, in a cool grey, slate and black and white palette. While there were also plenty of sequins in his evening gown looks - which everyone agreed were very young and fresh for Couture.
Karl's model friend Carla Bruni - who is expected to announce her engagement to French president Nicholas Sarkozy any day now if the rumors are to be believed - did not attend, as she was expected to - despite the fact that earlier this week Karl sent her and the president two very special iPods. He had personalised them with the music of DJ Michel Gaubert - for them to listen to on their daily morning run together. Ahh! Though we think we would have prefered a jacket!
