First Look: M&S s/s 2014

Given our level of obsession with Marks & Spencer’s a/w 2013 collection (have we talked about the coats enough yet?), we’re excited to get a first look at the high street stores spring offering – the second collection overseen by Belinda Earl.

And here it is. We seen it in real life and it doesn’t disappoint. ‘We’re feeling really positive about spring,’ says Earl. ‘I think what’s really great about it is that we’ve got really clear, wearable trends and also some newness. There are some really nice things in there and everyone in the office wants to wear them. I think when everyone starts wearing the clothes through choice that’s a real turning point.’

The collection has been divided up into five different trends; 90s Luxe, (our personal favourite), all sleek and simple monochrome pieces in silk, leather and cotton; Pretty Things, the ultra feminine, floral dresses; White Out, which does what it says on the tin; Paint Box, summer pieces in rainbow bright shade; and Worldwide which is heavy on print and embroidery and embellishment.

The brand’s Best of British collection is back for a second season too, ‘We’re really, really pleased with the customers’ response,’ Neil Hendy, Head of Design, told us. ‘For spring we wanted a cooler palette, and textures and fabrics are really important too. It’s a huge move forward in terms of what we’ve managed to get from our British manufacturers.’

So what will we be buying come January? The floral cropped top and matching high waisted trousers; the blue checked bomber jacket and matching tailored trousers; the white mule with its chunky block heel; the white dress with sheer panel at the hem; the pleated midi skirts and leather tunic tops’ and the duster coats – yes, for spring it’s still all about the coat.
