His sweeping ballgowns were immortalised in the work of iconic society photographer, Cecil Beaton.
Now, Americas best-known couturier, Charles James, is to be honoured as part of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art spring exhibition.
Timed to coincide with the Mets newly refurbished galleries, Charles James: Beyond Fashion will take a comprehensive look at the Anglo-American designer, showcasing a broad cross-section of his ultra-glamorous gowns.
Throughout his lifetime, James was determined to push the boundaries in his work. A revolutionary in a long lineage of French haute couture and English couture designers, he took a sculptural approach to his craft, using anatomical studies to inform his designs.
Aside from the dresses, ELLE is looking forward to the traditionally glitzy benefit that opens the spring exhibiton. May 5
