It takes more than a downpour to dampen a Stella girl's spirits.
Stella McCartneys Resort 2014 presentation in New York last night underlined that fact. Instead of allowing the ceaseless summer rain to disrupt her English-style garden party, the designer embraced the weatherand watched it bring her fans even closer together.
McCartney held court in the middle of a long marquee while Madonna, Kate Bosworth, Liv Tyler, Cameron Diaz and Steven Tyler said their hellos. Everyone was so tightly packed under cover that it got difficult to tell the models from so many Stella-clad editors.
As it happened, the models were split into two packs: daywear girls, who boogied around a record player spinning 1970s tunes out of the back of a fuchsia Morris Minor (with Linda plates, no less); and the eveningwear crowd, sipping champagne and laughing together on risers at the end of the hallway-like structure.
For daywear, McCartney showed python-embossed jacquard coats and dresses, and silk pieces printed with a herringbone-like matchstick motif.
Evening took a monochromatic turn, with sparkly-yoked dresses, shifts embellished with heart-shaped embroideries, and body-contouring black, white and navy designs.
As ever at a Stella show, the accessories shone just as brightly as the clothes. Standouts included summer-bright handbags and pretty much every pair of shoesthe best came loafer-style, with clever, curved wooden heels; or stacked up on several inches of raffia, as extreme platform espadrilles.
The better to rise above the puddles in, come next spring
