Here at ELLE HQ we're founder members of the Thomas Tait fan club, so when the invite to meet the designer and view his spring summer 2013 collection arrived, our immediate response was: 'Yes, please.'
The event was held in award winning architect Zaha Hadids London showroom, where the rails of immaculate garments hung alongside her futuristic sculptural furniture pieces.
Zaha herself hosted the event, looking resplendent in an electric blue silk Thomas Tait jacket (next season naturally). We asked Thomas about his link with the architect. I wouldnt say she is my patron shes a client and a wonderful supporter of mine, he said.
He went on to explain, She buys my pieces and so we were introduced. I love her work as much as she loves mine so it was an honour for me to hold the evening here and I feel the two elements fit well together. Even the colours go together.
We asked Thomas to name his most pinch-yourself moment so far. Winning the Dorchester Fashion Prize was certainly a high point, he told us.
Both financially and in terms of my profile. It was also a great opportunity to meet people in the fashion business Ive always looked up to. To hear that someone like [New York Times journalist] Cathy Horyn likes your work is such a thrill.'
On the subject of his designs, he told us he finds it hard to describe his own aesthetic. People do refer to my work as minimalism, but Im not so sure. During the design process theres a lot of cleaning up that goes on. A piece might start off busy, but then Ill reduce it and reduce it edit it down until it is really quite clean and simple.
