Its a family affair at Karl Lagerfelds Little Black Jacket exhibition, opening to the public tomorrow at the Saatchi gallery. The designers Chanel family is an elite worldwide crew of beautiful actresses, musicians, artists and stylists, and he gathered 113 of them together to photograph them wearing Chanels iconic little black jacket.
Clearly Karl is a family man, because hes chosen to depict a number of family dynasties within the exhibition. Sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning both make an appearance - the former looking ghostly in a white gown and deep shadowy eye makeup, the latter sweet and innocent with a flower garland round her head. All three Roitfelds are in there (Carine Roitfeld, who styled the whole series, is dressed in the guise of Mademoiselle Chanel herself). Jane Birkin is amongst the icons, and her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg wears the black jacket accessorised simply with a huge pregnant bump. Even the Richards sisters Theodora and Alexandra make it into Lagerfelds genetically elite.
The exhibition has just landed in London in the midst of its whirlwind worldwide tour, and indeed it was still being set up when we visited, with the last of the blown-up images being tacked simply onto the walls using drawing pins, and the take-away posters of Georgia-May Jagger being stacked in the centre of the room.
Little Black Jacket opened to much fanfare in Tokyo back in March, and has since stopped off in New York, Taipei and Hong Kong. The strong contingent of Asian actresses featured in the exhibition is notable Tang Wei, Rinko Kikuchi and Song Hye Kyo all wear the jacke More
