Sam Cam toasts British fashion

The drawing rooms of number 10 were crammed with each designer showing on the schedule including Christopher Bailey and Sir Paul Smith, a smattering of celebrity ambassadors by way of Poppy Delevingne and Laura Bailey, plus retailers and press.

Samantha Cameron, wearing Roksanda Ilincic with David Cameron and daughter Nancy watching admiringly from the sidelines, spoke of the need to ‘promote excellence to the world as we look forward to this special Olympic year’, that this season's fashion week had been ‘inspirational’ and called to action that we must ‘make 2012 the year where we focus on production. So we don't just design in Britain, we make it here too’.

Sir Philip Green immediately sprung to the challenge, pledging to make British production more prevalent. ‘It won't be easy, but it must happen,’ he said.

Anna Wintour honoured Sir Philip Green after his Topshop brand pledged another ten years of support for young designers through NEWGEN sponsorship. Wintour joked that Green, accompanied by his daughter Chloe in Mary Katrantzou for Topshop, was incapable of having a conversation without his phone going off ‘from Kate or Simon, or someone equally important.’

Fresh from Monday's acclaimed show, Erdem Moralioglu was bashful about the praise as guests swamped to congratulate him, ‘I'm really very pleased,’ he said. As was Mary Katrantzou after her stunning show that morning: ‘I've managed to get a few hours sleep so I'm ok. Just excited to see all the reviews.’
