Galliano goes online with Gazette

The future of the brand appeared shaky after John Galliano (the man) was fired following an anti-Semitic rant in a Paris bar in March 2011. But John Galliano (the brand) has dusted off its newsprint coattails to issue an online declaration of intent—and it’s called the Galliano Gazette.

‘The House of John Galliano is thrilled to be able to launch itself into cyberspace, and is excited to bring the elements of the Galliano Universe to e-commerce,’ the company says on the site.

The format of the Gazette evokes Galliano’s signature newsprint motif. With a newspaper masthead setting the tone, it features online shopping, a collections archive, a list of store locations and a Diary section.

Clicking on the ‘Brand’ heading brings readers to a version of events that elides all but the slightest mention of the brand’s founder. Instead, a biography of current creative director Bill Gaytten contains a skim-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to Gaytten meeting Galliano.

The revisionist version of brand history may rankle fans who remember the designer behind the original newsprint dress, but man, is it shoppable.
