Gym Class loves ELLE

Its always heart-warming when people say nice things about us behind our backs. So it was with no shortages of smiles that we noticed the latest instalment of Gym Class Magazine, a quarterly design-focussed publication.

For his eighth issue, founder Steven Gregor decided to focus on the design of one of his favourite magazines: ELLE.

Within design circles, ELLE is the hot magazine at the moment, Gregora magazine designer himselfexplained. The subscriber covers get a lot of attention in the mag-o-sphere, and rightly so, because theyre fantastic. It was a no-brainer, really.

In the past, Gym Class has interrogated editors and designers from the Gentlewoman, Fantastic Man and Spanish Esquire, another design-world darling.

This time around, Gregor produced a gallery of 26 past ELLE covers, recruited illustrator John Paul Thurlow to reinterpret the cover of the current ELLE Collections and grilled ELLEs art team in a brief Q&A.

From that we learn that Art Director Tom Meredith finds Carine Roitfeld inspiring (Because her work is her.) and that the art teams favourite covers range from Pete Doherty to Keira Knightley. Which cover gets Gregors top marks?

The cover where Kylie is slightly out of focus, he said without hesitation. The fact that it breaks all the rules, having an out-of-focus celebrity on the cover who is still instantly recognisable... On paper, its an idea that shouldnt work, but its beautifully executed.
