Margiela unravels the mystique

We interrupted the Maison Martin Margiela show about half way through the fittings process. The first model clasped her undone jersey panel gown across her bust while sticky Velcro held others together and underwear clumsily poked out as tacked-on zips traced where they would later be placed. No wait, this is a Margiela show. Artfully undone is the new done and unravelling the tailoring process created a visual feast.

This was menswear barely altered for the female figure but strikingly elegant in its purest form. Seam lines, darts and open zips laid the designer's task bare, transparent garment bags shrouded exhibit A, B and C in at times a dark reinvention of the body bag, especially when models walked like zombies towards the single spotlight with hair clumped across their faces.

Colour came towards the end when the house rugs underfoot were used as inspiration for capes, skirts and dresses, its tassel edging still in tact. For the accessory fan, new variants of the hugely popular block heeled ankle boots in carpet-print, cotton canvas and jersey. A collection that kept you thinking about it long after the final look had been shown.
