The McQueen show really might come home

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty drew a record-shattering 661,509 visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during its 77-day run.

A Met exhibition may be among the highest honours accorded to any designer, but that couldn’t keep UK-based McQueen fans from wondering why the London-born designer wasn’t celebrated with an exhibition closer to home.

Now, McQueen’s representatives have confirmed that talks are underway to bring the show back to the city that served as the designer’s first muse.

‘Alexander McQueen appreciates the huge amount of interest the public has shown towards the Savage Beauty exhibition,’ a spokesperson said in an email. ‘We have been in discussion with a number of major venues in London for some time now however nothing has been finalised. Please be assured that an official announcement will be made the moment we confirm our plans for London.’

A source told us that bringing the show to London has always been on the cards, and that steps in that direction were underway before the launch of the petition calling for a museum transfer. A post on the Fashion Editor at Large blog suggested that the show might open in 2013, timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of McQueen launching his business.
