For his tenure at the Mayfair establishment, Downton plans to install himself in the fumoir and fill Claridges with drawings of eminent hotel guests. And the fashion illustrator couldnt be more delighted about his new appointment.
'It's a dream gig. If I wanted to be a permanent fixture anywhere, it would be Claridge's. We've talked about it for several monthswhat does it mean, and what would I doand I just said yes to everything,' he told us yesterday as he accompanied Carmen Dell'Orefice to receive her honorary UAL degree.
We adore Downtons ability to capture the essential qualities of Linda Evangelista, DellOrefice, Cate Blanchett and countless runway models with a few well-placed strokes of ink. Evocative of the golden age of couture yet contemporary, his drawings make everyone appear impossibly glamorous.
'I'm so excited when people focus on drawing, not photography. We've been photographed to death and the world has been photographed to death. And I think Claridge's itself is a magical space for a lot of people. It certainly is for me.'More
