Mark your diaries, fashion fans: Giles Deacon is set to make his QVC debut in a few weeks time.
Yes, on March 10 the bespectacled Brit designer will appear on the brand’s TV channel, not as its latest recruit but to promote his jewellery collection for the shopping giant.
The 15 piece collection, which is set to launch in the UK on March 7th before being rolled out across the globe, is the latest to be produced under the Libertine by Giles Deacon label and the first for QVC. Two years in development, it features Pop pieces in brightly coloured enamel based on Giles’ illustrations, Edwardian-punk beetles and claws and some necklaces inspired by a certain 1970s disco group.
Giles told ELLE, ‘We wanted to create something really, really recognisable as Giles jewellery as a great intro for the QVC customers. People want something very special but also something affordable and attainable and that’s what we bring with the jewellery that we do.’
So what about the upcoming TV appearance – could this mark the beginning of a brand new career? ‘I’d like that! I’ve done a fair bit of TV before and I quite like it, it’s another fun thing to do in the whole package. I’m never shy of doing interviews; I’m not one of those designers who doesn’t want to have photographs taken or that sort of thing. We all like a brand new challenge, don’t we?’
Aside from the brand new jewellery collection, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to ask how preparations for his upcoming A/W 2013 show are coming along. ‘It’s racing along well. Not that you can ever do it in a formulaic way but it’s very organised, the timescale thing, but obviously you’re always producing new things that always have their own individual problems that need damage controlling. But it’s looking really exciting and it’s always really good to get your six months’ work to the point where you can show people.’
And while he wouldn’t reveal anything concrete about what we can expect from the collection, he did tell us that, ‘It’s quite an interesting departure from where we’ve been for the past two seasons. Obviously it has that same whaterverness of the thing that we do about it but it’s quite a kick off which I’m really enjoying.’ And, rather intriguingly he added, 'We’re nine years old this year which is quite an achievement and there’s lots of exciting things happening next year. I can’t say what but things are good.'
In the meantime, the jewellery collection will, fingers crossed, introduce Giles to a whole new audience. 'It will be interesting to see how it goes,' says the designer. 'I think it’s a very interesting step for QVC to take a good project on with a slightly stronger statement jewellery line than they’ve done before. I think they’ll be racing for their remotes!'
The Libertine by Giles Deacon collection will be available from 10 March 2013 at www.qvcuk.com. Prices start at £14.
