Couturier Jean-Louis Scherrer has passed away at the age of 78, it has been revealed today.
Didier Grumbach, president of French fashions governing body the Chambre Syndicale, confirmed that the legendary designer had suffered a lengthy illness.
A contemporary of Yves Saint Laurent on the Paris fashion scene of the 60s, Scherrer cut his teeth at before branching out with his own label in 1962. It was a huge success in Japan, and he was awarded the Gold Thimble for couture in 1980.
The company was initially sold in 1992 and changed hands various times before finally halting production of ready to wear and couture altogether in 2008.
Its latest owner, JSB International, is currently developing various other Scherrer licenses, including watches, WWD reports.
