Katie Hillier is something of a powerhouse in the accessories world. Between her work with Luella, Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham, and her own gold-and-diamond wire-animal jewellery (like haute paper-clip sculptures), she’s a name to know. Or carry—Marc even named a bag after his friend and close collaborator.
The latest from Hillier is a handbag collaboration with Loewe and long-time friend Stuart Vevers. The two designers, who have known each other since their studies at the University of Westminster, combined their talents to create a limited-edition collection of handbags for the storied Spanish leather brand.
‘Stuart is a very good friend and hugely talented, one of the best accessories designers in the world,’ Hillier said. ‘For me this was an absolute pleasure, to have the opportunity to work with such an established brand such as Loewe with the craft and workmanship at my disposal was a dream come true. And of course it was such good fun!’
Vevers and Hillier gave three of Loewe’s most popular handbag styles a revamp for a look Hillier called ‘Loewe with a wink’. They traded the classic leathers for poppier colours and replaced the traditional Loewe padlock with 3D versions of Hillier’s wire animals. The mini-sculptures include a snail, a mouse and a rabbit—but only one creature could be the designer’s favourite.
‘The rabbit is the Hillier mascot and my favourite animal,’ she said, adding that of the bags, she prefers the navy blue Amazona.
The Hillier Loewe collection is available from £895 at Loewe’s Mount Street store.
