Just as he had done in Paris back in January, the designer transformed Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen national garden into the inside of an aircraft for a delightful flight of fancy.
Last night for the launch of his Little Black Jacket exhibition, Lagerfeld was also on fine fettle. Looking forward to reprising his SS/12 couture collection today at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden he told WWD that it is to be "a special homage to Japan following the tsunami".
However, he also weighed in on his favourite subject (next to fashion of course): food. He observed that Japan had changed since his last visit, eight years ago, “It’s changed a lot but it’s changed for the better I think. I noticed that people became bigger than before because now they eat more cake and sweets and things... Normally, before, they were all tiny. It’s the kind of beauty you get from junk food.”
But as to the more traditional Japanese diet, Lagerfeld has nothing but praise: “You know I don’t eat bread, I don’t eat sugar, I don’t eat meat, so for me, the Japanese kitchen is perfect. ” Except for rice that is... “I hate rice.” Every rose has its thorn.
