Mary Katrantzou is celebrating her 8th London Fashion Week show this evening as she presents her spring summer 2013 vision to 417 (to be precise) editors and buyers eagerly awaiting her next move.
Katrantzous journey to date has been somewhat epic. Four years in, the wonder woman on the London schedule commands as long waiting lists for her £8,000 dresses as she does queues around the block for her £100 Topshop ones.
On the surface, its always been about the prints, and she was Head Girl of the Brit Print Revival. But her calling is in conceptual design that doesnt make most of us run away screaming. The Eureka moment came for spring summer 2011 when she ripped up her proposed collection a few weeks before the show and started again, focusing on an idea for 3D sculpted forms. She hit gold and then some. Variously described as dazzling, couture-like and Anna Dello Russo is in raptures, while Alexa Chung Tweeted Thank you for making great dresses.
