Mouret to lead Robert Clergerie

The designer, who counts Victoria Beckham, Scarlett Johansson and Beyonce among the devotees of his figure-conscious cocktail dresses, already has the approval of Clergerie himself.

‘I’m delighted to see Roland Mouret at the head of the maison that I created,’ Clergerie said in a statement. Now 76 years old, he founded the brand in 1978. ‘It is a great symbol to see such perspectives, with a talent who already knows and loves our company.’

Mouret has worked with Clergerie in the past. And like Clergerie, he triumphed in a long-running legal battle over ownership of his brand name. Fung Brands Limited, Clergerie’s owners since April, selected the debonair French designer in hopes that he can reenergise their new acquisition.

‘To be the creative director of Robert Clergerie is an incredible opportunity,’ Mouret said. ‘For so many people, it’s such an important brand and held in the highest affection, as is Robert Clergerie himself. This is a chance for me to work with a master on the art and craft of shoe design and to be part of the special relationship that women have with their shoes.’
