The Cannes Film Festival may be famous for stars stepping out on the red carpet in a show-stopping gown, but 2014’s festival is fast becoming known as the year actresses spoke out about sexism in Hollywood.

Following on from director – and this year’s jury president – Jane Campion’s comments about the industry being ‘undemocratic’ and sexism ‘inherent’, actress Naomi Watts said, ‘Jane Campion is right to say that there’s an inherent sexism in the film industry.

‘But there’s also a lack of women putting themselves forward […] female directors and actors have a different voice, different stories. It’s not helpful to be compared to men.’

And Watts and Campion are not the only ones: at a press conference for How To Train Your Dragon 2, Cate Blanchett spoke out about being asked about life as a working mother, saying: ‘How do you balance? How do you have it all? It’s certainly a question that’s never asked of men.’
