Nicola Formichetti is Diesel’s first ever artistic director.

In his inimitable style, Renzo Rosso, founder of the cult Italian label, confirmed his appointment with the words: ‘I finally met somebody as crazy as I am.’

Rumours placing Formichetti at Diesel hit fever pitch yesterday, as his two-year tenure at the house of Mugler came to an end. At the time, Joel Palix, president of Clarins Fragrance Group and director general of Mugler, said that the stylist-turned-designer had ‘accomplished our original mission of bringing his energy to the brand’.

Now, he’s going to be marrying that unique charm with the global reach of Diesel. Watch out, world; he will be taking a complete overview of the brand, from product to interiors to marketing.

‘Nicola shares my vision and I find it incredibly inspiring to work with him: two creative planets are colliding to generate fresh, mad, insane ideas,’ said Rosso in a statement released today. ‘With his help, I want to break more rules and bring the real Diesel to a new generation.’

‘When Renzo asked me,’ said Formichetti, ‘I remembered that Diesel and I are all about the same things. No rules! It’s about being empowered, it’s about being free. It’s a positive revolution. We’re going to REBOOT! Hit refresh. That’s our first project: we’re ripping apart everything to re-build something bigger. I want to get the creative young people around the world to be part of the process.’
