His Balmain show was, if possible, more OTT than ever. But then this is the man who dresses the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna – sensible tweed suiting and sober utilitarian minimalism isn’t going to cut it. There were pinstripe suits, albeit with a stupendously sexy long and lean trouser (the shape of the season, already) and there were sheer pussy bow blouses – but that’s where any kind of nod towards daywear ended.
What Balmain does best is elaborately embellished eveningwear, and that’s where this collection shone. Quite literally, in most cases, with gold brocade, gold sequins, gold lame, gold fringing and gold lurex piled onto just about everything. Prince on the soundtrack said it all: Let’s Go Crazy.
