It says everything about the power of Ralph Lauren that he can get the fashion press to show up at 9pm in Central Park, issuing invitations that mysteriously promised a ‘Polo Ralph Lauren happening’.

Greeted by handsome men in white Polo shirts, we were dispatched in golf buggies to the event where a sea of raised iPhones captured the scene – a 60ft-high water screen, on to which was projected a holographic film of the designer’s spring 2015 collection.

It was a feat of high-tech digital engineering, a 4D illumination of New York’s iconic landmarks, through which models appeared to walk.

At the end of the ‘show’, Ralph himself appeared, dancing like Fred Astaire for a moment before his image fragmented and the giant POLO sign beamed over the park.
