When you have Jessica Alba filming your show from the front row, it’s got to be a good sign.

Ralph Lauren took a vacation to Spain by way of his Spring Summer 2013 collection and the actress – capturing key looks on her iPhone, possibly for future red carpet reference – seemed captivated by his senoritas.

Sorry, that should probably be rephrased: Mr Lauren doesn’t do Spain the tacky way and this was no costume drama.

The country provided a rich source of inspiration to the designer, however. This was a strong show which took his iconic pieces – lace skirts, bias-cut chiffon evening dresses, embellished jackets, masculine tailoring, white shirts – and gave them a flamenco whirl, adding fringed shawls and flat-topped hats and leather pannier bags for good measure. From the first matador suit to the last jet beaded dress, it was entirely convincing.

It also provided perhaps the best moment of New York fashion week: the model Karlie Kloss, in a floor-length hand crocheted skirt and white shirt, a slippery satin ribbon tied round her neck and a hat perched over one eye, stalking the runway with a fan in one hand.
