‘I never get bored of people asking me about that Kate Middleton moment,’ enthuses Rebecca Taylor, the womenswear designer responsible for the staple wardrobes of such starlets as Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Roberts and Cameron Diaz.
‘I’ve been a fan of the Royal Family ever since I was a small child growing up in New Zealand, so when the Duchess wore one of my suits to a public reception in April, it was a career highlight. I don’t know where to go from there!’
But Taylor’s dizzied adoration belies her sharp business acumen. She immediately re-issued the jacket and skirt worn by the Duchess (both of which are now completely sold out).
She has also harnessed the enormous surge of interest the brand enjoyed in the British market, and created a Pre Fall collection that will appeal to a British audience.
‘London girls like to dress with a bit more femininity than the girls in New York – a lot prettier – they like colour, prints, softer edges,’ she explains.
‘I wanted to do a collection that wasn’t about what the department stores thought I should be doing, wasn’t about what the media thought I did, but all about me and what I wanted to wear. And the British girls get me more than the American girls do I think.’
The collection is full of funky little racer back dresses with exposed zippers, signature leopard print (‘I can’t design a collection without it’) on dip-dyed boiled wool coats, and scuba-style raglan cut t-shirts with perforated leather sleeves.
It’s certainly a departure from the kind of thing we imagine the Duchess of Cambridge to go in for, but we’ll have one of everything on the rail, please.
