So strong is Rihanna’s new line for River Island that even a slick of blue lipstick, her new mullet and the attendance of Cara Delevingne at its London launch last night didn’t overshadow the key message: the clothes.

Fans and competition winners – aka the star’s ‘UK Navy’ – piled into the label’s Park House store on London’s Oxford Street, which had been transformed into 'Club RiRi' for the evening, to enjoy Champagne, meet Rihanna and the chance to shop the sportswear-influenced collection first.

Ri joined the party at around 9pm, dressed in her black-and-white baseball jacket. She was joined by bevvy of models – who were dressed her stylist, Styled To Rock judge Mel Ottenberg, and costume designer/collaborator Adam Selman – and BFF Cara, who wore the yellow jersey dress and G4LIFE beanie from the collection.

'This collection is definitely really special to me,' said the lady of the hour. 'I think I got a lot of freedom and I got to put a lot more of myself into it. I had so much fun designing it for summer/spring that autumn was just – it was just balls out. We had fun and just went for it and did things we didn't get to do before, and that's why I'm excited. That's what's special about it – it's different, it's fresh.'

Like a true pro, Cara tweeted her way through the night – as did we. Well, when you’re partying with selfie queen Rihanna, it would be rude not to.

The Rihanna for River Island a/w 2013 collection goes on-sale in selected River Island stores tomorrow, but pre-order is still already selling out fast online. Shop it like a fashion editor with your 25% River Island discount card, only with the October issue of ELLE – and don’t forget to tweet us what you buy @ELLEUK…
