The Council of Fashion Designers of America will name international superstar (and former ELLE cover star) Rihanna its Fashion Icon at this year's CFDA Awards.

The ceremony will take place on 2 June in New York, in collaboration with Swarovski.

The council have picked a winner whose sartorial choices have had an undeniable influence on popular culture.

Rihanna, who last year launched her own range for River Island, is ever-present on the fashion stage, from gracing the front row at all of the biggest fashion week shows to partnering with MAC Viva Glam campaign to raise money for AIDS charities.

She joins an impressive list of past winners including Lady Gaga, Iman, Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman with an accolade to be proud of.

Steven Kolb, CFDA CEO, said: ‘We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.’
