The front row at Ferragamo delivered a welcome shot of front-row starriness today, in the form of a sexy suited Michael Fassbender, flanked by Virginie Ledoyen and Ashley Greene. They’re skipping the glamour of the Oscars red carpet for a more sombre white carpeted catwalk at Ferragamo, and we were glad for it. But while the front row was showy, Massimiliano Giornetti’s AW13 collection for the label was anything but; a chic and understated parade of quality, forever pieces that won’t move mountains but will probably last as long as them. The set for the show was a simple light projection of bare wintry branches, and the colour palette reflected this – midnight blue, black, steely grey. The variation came once again in the luxurious fabrications – that ponyskin again, which is ubiquitous on this season’s runways, together with a rich brushed wool, beautifully stiff, thick leather, and injections of a techy mesh fabric here and there. There was a distinct 60s feel to the show, with mini pinafores layered over polo necks and retro-spacey shifts paired with white go-go boots. Neat little wristlet bags – a kind of zipped up pencil-case shape – were the statement bag of the season, in everything from croc-embossed white leather to iridescent silver leather. It was a serene show, unpretentious and un-challenging. But who needs to be challenging when they still look that good at the ripe old age of 81?
