The first lady wore an absinthe-green lace dress by fellow nominee Christopher Kane to present the award at the Glasgow Science Centre—a sartorial choice that winner Saunders considered a signal.
‘I’ve just been texting Christ Kane saying, “Sam Cam’s wearing your dress, you’re definitely going to win it!” so this is a huge surprise,’ the designer said as he accepted his statuette.
Ever the fashion diplomat, Cameron wore one of Saunders’ dresses during President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama’s state visit last month.
‘These awards celebrate the very best in Scottish fashion and remind us that Scotland is home to not only inspirational designers but also a very important textile industry,’ the BFC ambassador said.
Other award-winners included Henry Holland, for using Scottish fabrics in his International Brand of the Year; Skins actress Freya Mavor for Fashion Icon of the Year, and influential casting director Angus Munro for Communicator of the Year.
