Gevinson, now 15 and the founding editor of Rookie Mag, comes across just as preternaturally bright as you might expect a teenaged editor to sound. And with age comes wisdom—consider her analysis of the occasionally sniffy response to her first fashion week outing as evidence of her powers of insight:

‘When I went to fashion week for the first time, I was 13. People were confused about me being there for a few reasons. One was that I was a blogger. The word itself—‘blog’—it’s kind of an ugly word. It just doesn’t really sound very legitimate. And fashion as an industry has been really behind being online, so I think people were confused and angry that someone younger than them had figured it out. They would talk about how inappropriate it was for someone my age to be at fashion week, but this was coming from an industry that fetishizes youth.’

She goes on to describe why she founded Rookie, and explains how she accumulated her vast archive of references (which seems to befuddle some people).

‘When my blog first started becoming popular, people were always like, “How could she know about that band or that designer from the ‘60s?” And I just felt like, it’s the internet... you can do that nowadays!’

The best part of the interview, however, may be its setting. Far beyond her years though its resident may sound, Gevinson’s bedroom is filled with all the friend-pic collages, streamers, shoes and magazines that we remember from our teenage-dom. Watch the video here, and get ready to root for Gevinson that much harder.
