Backstage after the Chanel Paris Fashion Week show, Karl Lagerfeld took the opportunity to elaborate on one or two elements of the Spring/Summer collection.
Those enormous pearls? ‘I used the oversized pearls, and over-displayed so many, because I removed the braid from the jackets, removed the Chanel buttons and there were no camellias and no quilted bags [with one exception, WHAT WAS THAT?], so I needed the pearls as something that are immediately identifiable as Chanel, in the absence of all these other lovely Chanel [trademarks]’
And that extraordinary hula hoop bag. ‘For the beach, it’s for the beach,' Lagerfeld explained. ‘When you go to the beach you need space to put your towel,’ he continued (with a completely straight face), ‘and so, with this, you can put it on the ground, and hang things from it.’
Because of course the reason people don’t habitually take their quilted Chanel 2.55 handbags to the beach is because they are too small for a towel…
