And now it has emerged that before her marriage, she used to hire her hats for about £100 per wear from Get Ahead Hats in Reading – just up the road from the Middletons’ family home.

Her thrifty ways have endeared her to the public – this week, she rewore an Emilia Wickstead dress that she first wore just two weeks ago – and she’s been known to raid mum Carole’s wardrobe and shop as designer resale shops. This news, via the Daily Mail, cements Kate Middleton as one seriously budget-savvy shopper.

Both hats were worn before her wedding last April; the first is a black and white disc-shaped Philip Somerville creation, which she wore when William joined the Order of the Garter at Windsor in June 2008. The second is the swirling Aurora hat that she wore to the wedding of William’s close friend, Harry Meade, in October 2010 just weeks before her engagement was announced.

The owner of the hat shop set Kate’s hats aside once they were returned and is now selling them at auction on June 26. The hats are estimated to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500 but, given that they’re being sold through the same auction house that sold the see-through dress that she wore in that student catwalk show for £78,000, you can bet they’ll go for a lot more than that.
