Valentino is known for its red carpet gowns; structured to show off a miniscule waist, fit only for the purpose of standing still and preferably in the house's signature red. Sadly, these days you can count the trophy balls each year on one hand and with a front row containing Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo who prefer a softer look, something had to give. Thankfully though it wasn't the romance.
Daisy and polka dot embroidered layers and tightly woven pieces of lace in raffia and silk were used on form-fitting jackets and the prettiest dresses. It was youthful and pretty without being twee - the leather made sure of that. The final exits of long gowns in cocoa, cinnamon - and of course the red - gave a beautifully delicate and modern way of dealing with the Oscars. Hollywood take note.
