Donatella Versace marked the revival of her family’s couture arm with a show emphasising youth, vivacity and high-gloss disco oomph.

The looks came bright and sparkling down a mirrored set of stairs. An absinthe-green, one-shouldered, thigh-split sequinned gown; a ‘50s/futuristic moulded yellow body and corseted, silver-embellished mini-dresses set the tone. Smoky eyes and high ponytails continued the slick and fearless theme.

Diane Kruger, Anna Dello Russo, Cameron Diaz, Abbie Cornish and Ines de la Fressange turned up to mark the occasion. The Hollywood guests were particularly apt. For the past eight years, after all, Versace’s couture arm has received its best publicity not on the runway, but on the world’s red carpets.

This show underlined Versace’s strength in event dressing. No doubt it left a number of Oscar hopefuls (and their stylists) holding wish lists several gowns long.
